Animals in our Ecological System and Animal Science

Ecology is simply defined as study of relationship of living things and the environment where they live.

In an ecosystem, the continued growth of plants and animals depends on maintenance of the balance between the food producers (plants) and the food consumers (animals and man). Thus,  plants and animals (included the man) are key players of an ecosystem. Figure 1.1 shows the components of an ecological system and their relationships.

Figure 1.1 The interrelationship of the components of an ecosystem.

First and foremost it is a fact  that there are two components of ecosystem and that are biotic components and abiotic components

 - Biotic components refer to all living things and that includes organisms found on our planet Earth. There are lots of living things on our Planet Earth and mentioned: Plants, human being, animals and there are still more.

  - Abiotic components refers to the non-living things  on Earth such as light, rocks, soil, water etc.,

Biotic and Abiotic interactions maintain the equilibrium in the environment.

Thus, animal productions are extremely under wide range of environment such as the physical and chemical conditions (climate, soil and water resources, pollution); biological condition (plant resources of food, disease and pest) and human factor (cultural condition, social structure of raisers) and involvement in the economic systems) as shown in  Figure 1.2. Thus, manager-management-animal production relationship must be taken into consideration for efficient and better productivity Figure 1.3.

Figure 1.3 Manager management Animal Production Relationship

- Extensive management environmental conditions are highly controlled an integrated poultry enterprise confinement swine operation large dairies.

# # Many environmental condition are change to fit the animals.

- Extensive management -  less producer control over the environmental conditions in which animals are expected to produce.

# # Animals are change to fit the environment.

Right decision can be made to determine whether changing the environment or changing the adaptability of animals in the most economical way to produce optimal results of production.
